According to two eyewitness accounts, black disabled Vietnam Veteran Al Sutherland was handled with unnecessary force by two Northampton policeman sometime last week. Sutherland formerly worked at Veteran's Affairs and lived in the apartment complex behind Polaski Park, after being homeless for a period of his life. Sutherland is currently in the Intensive Care Unit of Cooley Dickenson Hospital, slipping in and out of consciousness.
This Friday, around 20 Smith students and supporters gathered for an Accountabili-TEA on the lawn of College hall. This event followed in the path of Smith's long-held tradition of all-campus tea-time on Friday afternoons. Students gathered on the lawn of College Hall to drink tea and hold an informational session about the Business Improvement District. The participants then marched on Smith campus, passing out information to Smith students and prospectives.
According to an eyewitness account, this weekend Northampton police beat up Al Sunderland, a disabled black veteran, in an alleyway near Seven-Eleven. He is currently in a coma at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This is the latest in a series of incidents of racist, sexist, and ableist brutality by Northampton police. A rally against police brutality--concerning this attack as well as the arrests on March 13th--will be taking place in downtown Northampton on Tuesday at 5:00.
